The perennial favourite despite a dry spell

Team Canada

The last title win for the "eternal favorite" dates back to 2019. While the tournament was canceled in 2020 and 2021 due to the pandemic, the name Team Canada has also been notably absent from the final matchups in 2022, 2023, and 2024. For the success-spoiled North Americans, this marks an unusually "long" dry spell.

Team Canada must continue to wait for its first Spengler Cup victory since 2019. In 2024, the ultimate underdog Straubing Tigers dashed the North Americans' hopes with a 4:2 win in the semifinals, despite all signs pointing to a Canadian triumph before kickoff.

Canada had demonstrated its potential on the opening day with an impressive performance against HC Davos. The North Americans also dominated their second group-stage match against the Straubing Tigers, securing a comfortable victory and earning an extra day of rest. Everything seemed perfectly set for a return to title contention after 2019. The semifinal loss to Straubing was all the more shocking, especially since the German team had already sent another tournament favorite, Pardubice, home the day before.

Once again, Team Canada had to bury its title hopes early last year. However, this setback is sure to fuel their determination to claim their 17th title as soon as possible. That’s why, even in 2025, the Canadians remain the eternal favorites of the Spengler Cup.
