The 100 years of the tournament
The Davos physician Dr Carl Spengler - son of Dr Alexander Spengler, who had laid the foundations for the Davos spa resort - was an enthusiastic supporter of HC Davos, which was founded in 1921. In an effort to support his club, but also to reunite the nations that had been enemies during the First World War through sporting contact, he donated a travelling mug at Christmas 1923. According to the foundation charter, he wanted to give the once hostile nations the opportunity to rediscover mutual understanding and trust in a fair, friendly test of strength and to shake hands in a spirit of comradeship.

Initially, they were able to compensate for the COVID-related withdrawal of two teams with replacements. Due to the effects of the COVID pandemic, the tournament in 2020 had to be canceled
For the fifth time in its 98-year history, and for the first time since 1956, the Spengler Cup could not take place in 2020. Aside from all the government restrictions to combat the spread of the virus, we couldn't imagine a Spengler Cup without a fan tent, without the Ice Dome, in a half-empty stadium, and without standing-room tribunes. Even with the best protection plan, a hockey celebration would neither be feasible nor meaningful. 2020: Canceled due to the COVID pandemic
