Sustainability
Ecological, social and economic
To the Hockey Club Davos AG as organizer of the Spengler Cup Davos, the sustainability of the tournament and social responsibility is a major concern. The points below show how care is taken for the environment before, during and after the event and how social responsibility is perceived around the Spengler Cup and its organization.
ENVIRONMENT
Uniforms made from plastic waste
The jerseys of the six participating teams as well al the fan trikots are made from recycled plastic bottle waste. This is possible thanks to our equipment and merchandising partner - Ochsner Hockey.
Transport
For many years now, visitors have been able to travel to and from the stadium free-of-charge, thanks to the partnership with the Rhätischen Railway (RhB). In Davos itself, the Spengler Cup organizes a free shuttle so that guests can get from the Park & Ride at the Davos lake to the stadium.
Energy
100% Davoser electricity
In the stadium and on the stadium grounds (temporary buildings) only 100% renewable water-generated Davos electricity is used. This is being done in cooperation with the Davos power station.
The waste heat from the ice fields goes through a heat network to the indoor swimming pool and sports center and is thus used sensibly.
Waste
Since a public event produces large amounts of waste, we have set ourselves the goal of keeping the amount of garbage as low as possible. Our helpers and cleaning teams ensure cleanliness around the clock during the tournament. Even after the tournament and on into Spring - when the snow melts - the Davos cleaning team is responsible for disposing of the waste on site.
High-quality cardboard is separated from the rest of the waste. The ice stadium, the fan tent and the ice dome are included. The cardboard separated at the event consists of packaging boxes from the catering company and the fan clappers used to create the unparalleled atmosphere. The spectators are asked to throw the cardboard clappers into collecting bins at the exits. The collected cardboard is then removed by the municipality of Davos, sold via a waste exchange and sent for further recycling. The proceeds from the sale are donated to the Davos Hockey Club's junior teams.
SOCIETY & SOCIAL AFFAIRS
Promotion of young talent
For many years our presenting partner has been organizing the event “UBS Kids Day” (UBS youth practice with Spengler Cup stars), enabling approximately 70 kids to experience the stars up close each year and the kids can visit a Spengler Cup game.
Helpers
As at the home games of HC Davos (National League, Champions League, Swiss Cup), the club can also count on its loyal helpers at the Spengler Cup. The Spengler Cup is supported by approximately 500 people, almost all of whom come from the surrounding countryside. Most of these helpers have supported the HCD for a very long time and currently there are no problems with recruitment between Christmas and the New Year.
Charity-Partner
Greenhope-Foundation
Greenhope organizes events to provide children with cancer and their families some distraction and happy moments. Thanks to the charity partnership with the Spengler Cup Davos, Greenhope can invite affected families and the foundation’s ambassadors to this major sports event during the last week of the year in Davos – in line with the foundation’s motto: #sportsagainstcancer.
Security & Preventative Measures
During the entire event our security staff is on the premises around the clock. Security is guaranteed by: traffic service, fire brigade, police, ambulance and security services. Each party has a list of duties suited to its area of competence. The entire security and the different parties are planned and coordinated by organizational staff.
As at all HCD home games, the protection of minors is ensured all over the grounds during the Spengler Cup.
A team of medical specialists and paramedics is available around the clock for emergencies.
ECONOMY
Regional added value
Around 100,000 people visit the grounds in and around the Eisstadion Davos during the six days between Christmas and the New Year - 70,000 of them in the stadium. This benefits the hotel industry as well as local shops, mountain railways, restaurants and many more.
Support in the region
The strong support in the region is also shown by the fact that the sovereign of Davos has approved - by clear majority (>84%) - a contribution to the additional expenditures of the renovations taking place in the Davos ice stadium. This was after the Davos Parliament had already unanimously approved the loan for the renovation costs last Summer. The Davos population and parliament have thus created the necessary framework needed for the Davos Hockey Club and the Spengler Cup to continue to act as sports ambassadors and economic forerunners in the future.
Sponsoring
long-standing and sustainable partnerships
The Spengler Cup is proud of its many long-standing and sustainable partnerships. These form the basic pre-requisite for the oldest club tournament in the world to take place every year in the Swiss Alps.
UBS was the first main sponsor back in 1985 and has been supporting the Spengler Cup for more than 30 years!
SWISS TOP SPORT
The Spengler Cup Davos is a member of Swiss Top Sport, the association of the 20 largest and most important sporting events in Switzerland.
As part of this partnership, we have committed ourselves to collecting data on the implementation of sustainability measures at www.saubere-veranstaltung.ch and to updating it annually.
