The perennial favourite despite a dry spell

Team Canada

The last tile for the “perennial favourite” dates back to 2019. As is well known, the tournaments in 2020 and 2021 fell victim to the covid epidemic. But even in 2022 and 2023 Team Canada’s name is absent from the final matchups. For the North Americans, accustomed to success, this represents an usually long dry spell.

Last year the Canadians appeared to be headed for the final. The Maple Leaves lead Pardubice 3-1 four minutes before the end of regulation and had the game under control. But the Czechs turned the game around in incredible fashion with three unanswered goals within 197 seconds, spectacularly eliminating the record title holder.
As every year, the Canadians are nonetheless among the top contenders. Team Canada has already captured 16 Spengler Cup titles, amongst others three times consecutively from 2015 to 2017. The squad is always exquisitely stacked. For many Canadians under contract in Europe the Spengler Cup is a welcome opportunity to present themselves in front of a broad audience in their homeland. Unquestionably, several big names will make their way to Davos in 2024 as well – Spengler Cup’s continues to enjoy a brilliant image in Canada and the national sports network TSN broadcasts all the games live to a national audience. That also explains why Team Canada never lacks motivation. For the competition it will be a great challenge to stop the “perennial favourite” this year as well.
